About this course

This 2-part webinar series will fully support history subject leaders in all aspects of their role:

Part 1 will support history subject leaders with ensuring that their curriculum is well-sequenced and meets the needs of the school’s context. Focusing on curriculum sequencing and mapping, including how oracy and vocabulary can be developed in history to support learning and identifying concepts that underpin and link learning across units of work; part 1 will aid history subject leaders in planning, refining or deepening their understanding of their existing scheme of work and the crucial role of oracy and vocabulary.

Part 2 will explore effective teaching strategies and methodologies in primary history. We will explore the enquiry process and using evidence in the classroom to deepen children’s learning. Key themes such as developing chronology and creating historical arguments will be explored.

A focus will be on the role of the history subject leader; creating an action plan, monitoring learning and assessment of history will be discussed and exemplified.

As well as being a forum for discussion, sharing good practice and exploring curriculum design approaches, we will also cover key documents such as the Ofsted subject report and subject insight video and share relevant blogs. Delegates will be able to use the content to support teachers within their own school.

  • Explore what might be included in history curriculum mapping, to ensure that there is logical sequencing, progression in learning and that that the curriculum meets the needs of the school community

  • Explore key historical concepts and investigate how these can be identified and woven through the curriculum to create progression

  • Consider how children’s sense of chronology within history can be secured (starting with the concepts of past and present), including understanding key narratives such as cause and consequence, similarity and difference and significance

  • Explore the enquiry process and consider how children will make progress in using evidence and creating historical arguments

  • Explore strategies for effective teaching of vocabulary and how oracy skills can be developed and used to secure understanding in history
